VIDEO: Taghazout – From fishing village to surfing Mecca

The Atlantic sea has always provided a living for people on Morocco’s coast, but dwindling catches in their fishing nets have caused many to seek a living in surfing in Taghazout. In the 14 years since a professional Portuguese surfer set up camp in Taghazout, the tiny berber fishing village has become a major international destination. And the vast majority of riders out on the waves are Europeans. Paul Rhys reports from the village of...

How to Train for your Surf Holiday in Morocco

We recently had personal trainer and Olympic 2016 hopeful, Phil Taylor, stay with us on his recent Surf Holiday in Morocco. After a week’s surfing, he was kind enough to write a guest blog for us with the best surf-specific exercises to get you in tip-top shape before your surf holiday here at The Spot Morocco! “After recently taking up the decathlon to chase my Olympic dream, I decided that 10 new skills wasn’t enough and chose a weeks holiday to learn how to surf with THE SPOT MOROCCO. After a few wipeouts I managed to stand up and ended the first day feeling pleased with myself but absolutely exhausted. As a personal trainer my mind immediately started racing with various exercises that would prepare the body for this kind of holiday. Firstly the paddling, easily the most tiring part of surfing. As you struggle against the breaking waves, it is important that you still have the energy and endurance in your muscles to get to where you need to be to catch that dream wave. The best and in my opinion the only way you can prepare yourself for this is in the water, at your local pool, doing front crawl using just your arms and a float to hold your body up. You will then need to be able to stand up on the surfboard. Here you can use the following: Press-up lean Whilst in press-up position keep your arms straight and lean as far forward as you can, pushing your shoulders forward. Elbows in press-up Get into press-up position with your hands underneath your shoulders, keep...

Surfing Morocco: A Surf Holiday with a Difference

Less than 4 hours away from Northern Europe lies one of the worlds premier surf destinations; Taghazout, Morocco. But surfing in Morocco is not just your average surf getaway, it’s a surf holiday with a difference. Not content with being  home to some of the world’s best and most consistent breaks,  Morocco is one of the most exotic, vibrant and interesting countries on the planet. Endless sunshine, breath taking scenery and rolling points on every corner of the coastline – you could be anywhere…right? But add the countries rich culture and throw in the herds of goats that line the streets, the camels and nut sellers that roam the sandy beaches, the tagines bubbling on coal stoves at local cafes and the call to prayer that can be heard whilst you’re sat in the line up – this is what makes Morocco.  Visit between September-May in order to make the most of the big Atlantic swells that roll through and you’re on to a winner. It is a truly unique surf destination, with so much more to offer. We found this video that gives you a little taste of the real surf Morocco experience. Recommendations Getting there You can fly from the UK to Agadir or Marrakech with EasyJet, British Airways & Thomson Fly. Flight information from the rest of Europe can be found here. The Surf Cafe Cookbook: A Must Have for Surfing Foodies!

It’s more than just a cookbook, it’s about eating, surfing and living by the coast… Since moving to Morocco and spending far too much time meandering through the souks taking in all the incredible, fresh produce that is on offer, I seemed to have developed a bit of penchant for cooking new and exciting things as well as  burying my head in too many cookbooks…when not surfing, of course. So you can imagine how excited I was when I caught light of the new The Surf Cafe Cookbook. Cooking tips, recipes, surfing, gorgeous photography and cute illustrations…All in one place! Penned by two surfers and general outdoor lovers, Irish girl Jane Chambers and South African born Myles Lamberth, the book was inspired by the coastal café they run, Shells, right by the sea in Ireland. From foraging on the beach to creating the perfect brunch, the book encourages you to make locally produced food that’s fresh, fun and tasty. The perfect food for sharing with friends and family around the kitchen table, down at the beach or after an epic surf in Morocco! Most of all, this book is for the casual cook who likes delicious food that’s straightforward to make. Plus, you won’t need to shop all day for these recipes, and most will take less than an hour to make. All in all, a definite must-have for all surfing foodies I’d say! To grab yourself a copy and start cooking up a storm head over to their website: The Surf Cafe...

Twas the night before Christmas at The Spot Morocco…

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Tamraght Not a creature was stirring, not even a camel; The surfboards were stacked by the wetsuits with care, In hopes that a big swell soon would be there; The surfers were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of perfect waves danced through their heads; When down at the beach there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. When what to my wondering eyes should I see, But Anchor Point right hander working perfectly! I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles he’d sent this swell quick, And I heard him exclaim, as he cruised out of sight: “Happy surfing to all, and to all a goodnight!” Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope to see you out here in Morocco in 2012! Seasons Greetings From all of us here at The Spot...

Surf Spot Guide 2: Boilers

The second in a series of local surf spot guides from us here at The Spot Morocco. Type of wave Point break Wave Direction Right Bottom Reef/rock Access Approx 25 min drive North from our surf camp in Tamraght. Level Suitable for pro and advanced surfers.
